Gemini — AI Glossary

Gemini is Google's family of multimodal AI models, capable of processing and generating text, images, audio, video, and code within a single architecture. Launched in late 2023 as the successor to PaLM 2, Gemini powers Google's consumer products (Search, Workspace, Android) and is available to developers through the Gemini API and Google Cloud's Vertex AI platform.

Why Gemini Matters

Gemini represents Google's unified approach to AI — one model family across all modalities rather than separate models for text, vision, and code. This matters because it enables seamless cross-modal reasoning: analyzing a diagram and writing code from it, or understanding a video and answering questions about its content.

For developers, Gemini competes directly with Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI's GPT series. The model is available in multiple tiers — Ultra, Pro, and Flash — letting teams choose the right balance of capability and cost. Google's deep integration with Search, Gmail, and Docs gives Gemini a distribution advantage that standalone API providers can't match. Its extended context window (up to 1 million tokens in some configurations) makes it particularly strong for long-document analysis.

How Gemini Works

Gemini uses a transformer-based architecture trained natively on multimodal data from the ground up, rather than bolting vision onto a text model. Key technical details:

  • Mixture of Experts (MoE): Gemini Pro and Ultra variants use MoE architectures, activating only a subset of parameters per query to improve efficiency
  • Native multimodality: Text, images, audio, and video are processed through shared representations, enabling cross-modal reasoning without separate encoding pipelines
  • Long context: Supports context windows up to 1M tokens, enabling ingestion of entire codebases or lengthy documents in a single pass
  • Tool use: Supports function calling, grounding with Google Search, and code execution — similar to the agentic capabilities seen in tools like Claude Code
  • Google: The parent company developing and deploying Gemini across its product ecosystem
  • Claude: Anthropic's competing model family, focused on safety and extended thinking capabilities
